THE YOKE OF HIS DISCIPLINE Poem Devotional

And it is good for people to submit at an early age to the yoke of his discipline.

                                                      -Lamentations 3:27 (NLT)

A poem by ILMA

It is good for people to submit to God early

The yoke of his will break bondages severely

Surrendering your will to the Father when you are young

It will protect you from rebellion, lawlessness and harm.

The yoke of his discipline can bring restraint early on in life

The Lord tames your flesh and brings you light

He will guard you from falling into sin

He will bind you in his love and he will redeem.

A yoke is a wooden crosspiece that is fastened over the necks of two animals and attached to the plow or cart that they are to pull.  The Bible makes frequent use of the yoke as a symbol of work and servitude. Jesus asks us to take his yoke upon us and let him teach us because he is humble and gentle at heart. He assures us that his yoke is easy to bear and his burden is light (Matthew 11:28-30).

The bible says that it is good for people to submit to the yoke of God’s discipline at an early age. When we yoke ourselves in God’s discipline, we will find peace and be free from sin’s bondage.

PRAYER

Lord, keep me yoked to you.

REFLECTION

Why is being yoked to Jesus early in our lives essential to a Christian’s life?

April 19 Give up Idolatry Poem Devotional The Power of God’s Word

troysbutterflyevent 068

April 19                                                                                  The Power of God’s Word

Therefore put to death what belongs to your worldly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry.  –Colossians 3:5 (HCSB)

GIVE UP IDOLATRY

A poem by ILMA

Do you struggle with greed or immorality?

Do you know that these are forms of idolatry?

When you have impure thoughts or intentions

You are not far from dishonesty and corruption.

When you lustfully desire anyone

Or plot some bad deeds to someone

You do not honor what God has done

You put yourself first instead of his Son.

It is a fact that the enemy wants to blind you to the different forms of idolatry. You might have been enslaved by so many manifestations of it without even knowing it. The dictionary defines idolatry as blind or excessive devotion to someone or something.  We can idolize our own selves, our spouse, children, friends or someone we look up to so much that it takes our time away from the top most priority in life, God.

Matthew 22:37 tells us “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”  This is the greatest commandment. When one does not follow it, they resort to all forms of idolatry such as sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire, and greed.

PRAYER

Lord, keep me away from anything that will replace you in my heart.

REFLECTION

Why do you think we should avoid idols?

ALL FOR GOOD Poem Devotional

guelph arboretum 2012 028

April 18                                                                                  The Power of God’s Word

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

                                                                                    -Romans 8:28 (NLT)

ALL FOR GOOD

A poem by ILMA

When times are rough and challenging

Do you endure and keep on believing?

When you are rejected and violated

Do you get discouraged or feel offended?

When it all seems hopeless and looks like we are doomed

God causes everything to work together for our good

He is the only one who knows and sees

Give back his love and trust him completely.

Do you find it hard to completely trust someone? This is an area in my life that I struggled a lot with. It could be because I am a very visual person and that I have to see things to believe. Just like the apostle Thomas who has to see Jesus to believe that he has resurrected, I have a hard time just having faith unless I see it.

The bible tells us that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love him and who are called according to his purpose. In other words we are invited to trust God completely because he has the best plan for the lives of those whom he has chosen.

PRAYER

Lord, show me how to trust you completely.

REFLECTION

Why is faith essential in a believer’s salvation ?

PRAYING IN SOLITUDE Poem Devotional

wellington museum 054

April 17                                                                                    The Power of God’s Word

Before daybreak the next morning, Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place to pray.      –Mark 1:35 (NLT)

PRAYING IN SOLITUDE

A poem by ILMA

Do you find time each day to isolate from this world?

Do you seek God and study his word?

Jesus went to a place apart from the rest

He went to God to consult him and get blessed.

When no one is looking

That’s the best time for praying

Uninterrupted moments with our father

It will bring us to his kingdom closer.

We live in a world full of noise and distractions. We do everything to reach our goals in life. We provide for ourselves and our families. In the process, we get consumed by this world and lose perspective of who we are and who we belong to. We don’t prioritize praying to our heavenly father who provides for all our needs.

Jesus, the son of God always knew his priorities. The bible says that even before daybreak, he got up and went to an isolated place to pray. This was right after Jesus healed so many sick people.  In the midst of ministering to the sick and broken people, Jesus found time to go to his father just before he face another crowd of people who would clamor for more miracles and healing.

PRAYER

Lord, allow me to be with you intimately often.

REFLECTION

Why is it important to have a quiet place to pray?

HUMILITY BREAKS ENTITLEMENTS Poem Devotional

monocliff 2011 317

April 16                                                                                    The Power of God’s Word

You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to.

                                                                                            – Philippians 2:5-6 (NLT)

HUMILITY BREAKS ENTITLEMENTS

A poem by ILMA

Do you often expect people to treat you right?

Do you seek approval and recognition in your life?”

Do you get angry when you are oppressed?

Do you struggle when you are treated less?

You must have the same attitude as Christ had

Though he was divine, he didn’t think equality with God

Instead, he chose to be humble and lowly

He knows he is loved and no one can change his identity.

As a young adult, I always fight for my rights and never tolerated injustice or discrimination towards me. It was a result of not having a voice and not being seen during the first formative years of my life. I continued on with this crusade to be treated right up until my forties. I role modeled this kind of entitlement with my son. I reaped what I sowed. The spirit of entitlement consumed my life and sadly, it was passed on to my son. He absorbed that same spirit of pride. The bible tells believers that we must have the same attitude as Christ had. Though he was God, he did not claim equality with him.

PRAYER

Lord, break away the spirit of entitlement in my life.

REFLECTION

How can humility break down entitlements?

LIFE GIVING FOUNTAIN Poem Devotional

auries 2012 visit 129

April 15                                                                                    The Power of God’s Word

The words of the godly are a life giving fountain; the words of the wicked conceal violent intentions.       –Proverbs 10:11 (NLT)

LIFE GIVING FOUNTAIN

A poem by ILMA

Those who are godly and righteous

They are prudent and courteous

Their words are life giving fountain

They help you overcome your own mountains.

The words of the wicked conceal violent intentions

They deceive you and bring you confusion

Feed on God’s word and stay away from evil

Put on God’s armor to stand firm against the devil.

I have had many encounters with wicked and ungodly people. I became an easy prey to target because I didn’t know God’s truth. I read the bible in my late twenties but didn’t really study it until a few years ago.  When I started seeking God’s word and following them, convictions and revelations finally dawned on me. Everything I needed to know about God, myself, family, friends and all the relationships in my life were explicitly explained in the bible. Suddenly, everything became lucid to me. I can distinguish clearly between evil and good. The enemy always wants us to be in a state of confusion so that we will stay in sin. The only way we can discern evil intentions is when we soak in God’s words. It reveals to us lies from the truth.

COMMON SENSE FROM THE WORD Poem Devotional

sauble beach 2011 658

April 14                                                                                    The Power of God’s Word

My words are plain to anyone with understanding, clear to those with knowledge.    –Proverbs 8:9 (NLT)

COMMON SENSE FROM THE WORD

A poem by ILMA

The word of God is alive

It brings light and makes you thrive

Only those who have faith can understand

They gain knowledge by following his commands.

It becomes plain to anyone who believes

It brings clarity to those who pursue and seek

God brings revelations and convictions to the wise

Their common sense comes from following God’s advice.

There are so many Christians I know that have a hard time understanding God’s word. In the past, I also struggled with it. These past three years I have gotten some revelations from reading it. The bible is not like any other book. It breathes life on the heart of the reader. It speaks to us when we need to hear some things in our lives. It teaches and guides us to the truth. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us what is right. (2 Timothy 2:16)

Proverbs 8:9 specifically states that those who seek God’s word are granted understanding and knowledge. It becomes second nature to hear God’s voice and discern things when you are consumed by it.  Like lovers, the more you want to know your beloved, the deeper your relationship turns out to be.

PRAYER

Lord, give me a constant hunger for you.

REFLECTION

What has God’s word taught you in life lately?

STUBBORNNESS LEADS TO TROUBLE Poem Devotional

canada day 2011 003

April 13                                                                                    The Power of God’s Word

Blessed are those who fear to do wrong, but the stubborn are headed for serious trouble.         –Proverbs 28:14 (NLT)

STUBBORNNESS LEADS TO TROUBLE

A poem by ILMA

Being stubborn is a manifestation of pride

It brings too much conflict in life

The obstinate find it hard to agree

They want to take all the control and be free.

Blessed are those who fear the Lord

They cling on God’s word as their sword

They enjoy liberty that comes from righteousness

They are protected from evil all forms of wickedness.

I have been stubborn for almost three decades of my life and I can attest to what the bible says about heading for serious trouble when one is obstinate. I was fearless and did everything to satisfy my flesh. I was obsessed with human knowledge and used it to achieve goals in life. I didn’t consult God with my plans. I thought I know it all.  Despite my rebellion, he didn’t give up on me. He watched over me as I rebelled and disobeyed him.  I was a very arrogant, prideful and judgmental person. God dealt with me very patiently and he still wants me back despite all. He gave me tough love until I realized my foolishness brought much trouble and held me prisoner to sin.  Then God freed me when I finally obeyed him.

PRAYER

Lord, free me from pride and rebellion.

REFLECTION

Why is obedience a prerequisite to freedom and peace?

PRAISE, WORSHIP & THANKSGIVING DAILY

monocliff 2011 310

April 12                                                                                    The Power of God’s Word

It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to the Most High. It is good to proclaim your unfailing love in the morning, your faithfulness in the evening.

                                                                                   -Psalm 92:1-2 (NLT)

PRAISE, WORSHIP & THANKSGIVING DAILY

A poem by ILMA

Remember to start your day with praise

Give thanks and listen to what he says

It renews your mind and makes you see

It protects you from bondage and sets you free.

Proclaim the Lord’s unfailing love constantly

The Lord’s love and help will be yours instantly

Seek his word and remain faithful to God

Never end your day without giving him laud.

What do you do as soon as you wake up each day? Does your mind race to achieve your goals and do your own will? I have developed the habit of waking up and thanking God each morning.  I started this habit when I was seven years old. I got interrupted with this habit by sin in my mid-twenties and stopped relating with God for a decade. I felt condemned with the sins so I was trapped into thinking that I don’t deserve his love; then I rebelled. The bible tells us that it is good to give thanks to God and proclaim our unfailing love in the morning and return his faithfulness in the evening.

PRAYER

Lord, I glorify you constantly.

REFLECTION

Why is exulting and thanking God indispensable in a Christian’s life?

PRAY WITH AWARENESS & GRATITUDE

p

April 11                                                                                    The Power of God’s Word

Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.

                                                                                -Colossians 4:2 (NLT)

PRAY WITH AWARENESS & GRATITUDE

A poem by ILMA

Do you find yourself overwhelmed with life?

Do you search everywhere but God’s light?

Devote yourself to prayer daily

It will alleviate your burden easily.

Pay attention to what you think

The enemy can steal if you blink

Always be thankful for what you have

Remember that you are always loved.

Many people depend too much on their own strength to make it through life. Every day, we make a lot of little or big decisions and if we never consult God with any of these choices we make, we can end up hurting others and ourselves.  Self-will was a major contributor to many adversaries in my life.  I was always taught to be independent and self-reliant. When I studied God’s truth, I was surprised to know that I was supposed to depend on God for everything. If I only operate based on my own desires without consulting his plan for me, I run the risk of doing things that will hurt me eventually. Aligning my life’s map with God’s design for my life will make me reap his promises. The bible tells us to devote ourselves in prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart. When we do, we follow God’s plan.

PRAYER

Lord, keep me focused on you.

REFLECTION

What happens when someone is aware and thankful?
