ECCLESIASTES 1 THE DOWNSIDE OF HUMAN WISDOM Posted on August 30, 2023 by ilmaarts August 31 ________________________________________ ECCLESIASTES 1 12 I the Preacher have been king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13 And I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven. It is an unhappy business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with. 14 I have seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind. 15 What is crooked cannot be made straight, and what is lacking cannot be counted.16 I said in my heart, “I have acquired great wisdom, surpassing all who were over Jerusalem before me, and my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.” 17 And I applied my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is but a striving after wind. 18 For in much wisdom is much vexation, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow. – Ecclesiastes 1:12-18 ________________________________________ ECCLESIASTES 1 THE DOWNSIDE OF HUMAN WISDOM A poem inspired by these verses by ILMA Our human nature desires wisdom for the sake of an advantage We want to appear knowledgeable so we can build up our own image We pursue studies so that we can be recognized and get a good job But after we finish school, we cannot even apply all those things we knew We bombard ourselves with an influx of data and information Yet, the more we know, the more confusion and vexation When our minds are always focused on satisfying our cravings The pursuit of wisdom can pose much obsessing and fussing. The wisdom that we ought to pursue is to know God and follow his will This kind of wisdom will bring us the Spirit’s fruit and make us avoid sin The upside of godly wisdom is that it brings us peace and liberation The downside of human wisdom is that it results in pride and confusion Let us not pursue knowledge for the sake of knowing Instead, seek God and follow his will and you’ll be loving Human knowledge will have no bearing on our spiritual maturity Godly wisdom on the other hand, will benefit our everlasting destiny. ________________________________________ REFLECTION • The verse “in much wisdom is much vexation”, how is this different from the saying “knowledge is power”?
