1 TIMOTHY 2 INSTRUCTIONS FOR MEN & WOMEN DURING ASSEMBLY

August 1

1 TIMOTHY 2
8 I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; 9 likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. 11 Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control. – 1 Timothy 2:8-15

1 TIMOTHY 2 INSTRUCTIONS FOR MEN & WOMEN DURING ASSEMBLY
A poem inspired by these verses by ILMA
Since God isn’t a God of chaos, we are all instructed to have order in worship
Men are to pray fervently without distractions, resentments, quarreling or anger
They are to lift their hands including their minds and hearts to their Lord and Master
They are to take seriously their positions of authority over their families
They are to lead their families in proper decorum during assembly
Men are responsible to lead their family members to truth of the gospel.
Women must wear respectable clothing as they come to worship the Lord
The ladies must dress modestly and must not look like those from the world
They are to submit to the leadership of their husbands and not be overbearing
The women must not engage in much talking for it can lead to gossiping
She is to be silent and listen to the gospel that is being presented
She must also support her husband in all that he leads her to do.

REFLECTION
• Why do you think God gave men and women instructions to follow during public worship?
• Why do you think there are more instructions for women than for men in this letter of Paul to Timothy?
• How should we address someone who do not follow these guidelines?

COUNTING LOSSES AS GAINS FOR CHRIST ILMA’S VLOG

COUNTING LOSSES AS GAINS FOR CHRIST
7 But whatever things were gain to me, these things I have counted as loss because of Christ. 8 More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them mere rubbish, so that I may gain Christ, 9 and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith, 10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; 11 if somehow I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.- Philippians 3:7-11
________________________________________
In the previous verses 3-6, Paul claims the many things that qualifies him to boast about all the legitimacy of his zest to know God’s law and being a Hebrew of Hebrews, in the following verses, he claims that they are not useful for him anymore because of Christ. Though he used to value all his knowledge of the law, he doesn’t consider it that important anymore because he has gained Christ already. He now thinks all these things that used to matter much to him, is no longer of value to him anymore. In verse 9, he rejects any form of self-righteousness he may have gained from knowing and following the law. The Holy Spirit must have changed Paul entirely because in verse 9, he now sees how faith in Christ is the only way he will have the righteousness of God.
Spurgeon says “He was skilled in spiritual arithmetic, and very careful in his reckoning. He cast up his accounts with caution, and observed with a diligent eye his losses and his gains.” We can say that Paul’s attitude was the same that Jesus described in the parable of the pearl of great price in Matthew 13:45-46 which says 45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.
David Guzik comments that Paul did not only count his religious pedigree as a loss; he counted all things loss – but he counted them as a loss in view of the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus. It wasn’t so much that those things were worthless in themselves, but compared to the greatness of the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus, they really were nothing. This counting loss was not merely an internal spiritual exercise. Paul had indeed suffered the loss of all things that he might gain Christ.

I WILL RECOUNT YOUR WONDERFUL DEEDS ILMA’S VLOG

I WILL RECOUNT YOUR WONDERFUL DEEDS
I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart;
I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.
2 I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.
3 When my enemies turn back, they stumble and perish before your presence.
4 For you have maintained my just cause;
You have sat on the throne, giving righteous judgment.
5 You have rebuked the nations; you have made the wicked perish;
You have blotted out their name forever and ever.
6 The enemy came to an end in everlasting ruins;
Their cities you rooted out; the very memory of them has perished.
7 But the LORD sits enthroned forever; he has established his throne for justice,
8 And he judges the world with righteousness; he judges the peoples with uprightness.
9 The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.
10 And those who know your name put their trust in you,
For you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you. – Psalm 9:1-10

David manifests throughout the psalms his worship of the Lord. It shows his humility and love and obedience to the Master of his life. In this psalm, he recounts the many wonderful deeds that the Lord has extended to him. He uses all this remembrance to praise God and to remind himself of God’s steadfast love and deliverance from wickedness and evil. Shouldn’t all of God’s people do the same? Oftentimes, we get consumed by troubles and suffering that we forget to recall those times that the Lord has shown us favor, mercy and grace. We automatically rely on ourselves and problem-solve instead of counting the many times God had been faithful to help and deliver us from evil.

ADORATION: Praise you Lord as you continually rescue your beloved people.
CONFESSION: Forgive me whenever I fail to recount your wondrous deeds in the past.
THANKSGIVING: Thank you for giving me unconditional love though I don’t deserve it.
SUPPLICATION: May we all remember the times God rescued us and walked us through.

• How do you think recounting the many good deeds God did changes our views?

MAKE HASTE TO HELP ME O LORD ILMA’S VLOG

April 10
_______________________________________
MAKE HASTE TO HELP ME O LORD
11 As for you, O LORD, you will not restrain your mercy from me;
Your steadfast love and your faithfulness will ever preserve me!
12 For evils have encompassed me beyond number;
My iniquities have overtaken me, and I cannot see;
They are more than the hairs of my head; my heart fails me.
13 Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me! O LORD, make haste to help me!
14 Let those be put to shame and disappointed altogether
Who seek to snatch away my life;
Let those be turned back and brought to dishonor who delight in my hurt!
15 Let those be appalled because of their shame who say to me, “Aha, Aha!”
16 But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you;
May those who love your salvation say continually, “Great is the LORD!”
17 As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me.
You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God! – Psalm 40: 11-17

“Make haste to help me, O Lord” seems like David is asking God to hurry up and rescue him. Some religious and legalistic people may seem that this is inappropriate for a servant of the Lord to command his Master and Lord. If you do not take this phrase out of context, you will see how much David knows his Master so well. He is confident that the Lord he serves is someone who made a lot of promises to him that he is sure to receive. It almost illustrates the relationship between a father and his child. His child knows that because his father loves him or her so much, he is able to ask anything from him that will be a deliverance from his enemies. He knows that the father will protect him. That is probably how God wants us all to come to him and ask confidently what he is willing to give us.
________________________________________
ADORATION: Praise the Father, who is the greatest of all fathers.
CONFESSION: Forgive me when I do not intimately relate with you.
THANKSGIVING: Thank you for constantly being there for me, Lord.
SUPPLICATION: May we get intimate with our knowledge of our loving heavenly Father.

ON SEXUAL SIN Poem Devotional

ON SEXUAL SIN
A poem by ILMA
You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you
“Food was made for the stomach, and the stomach for food”
Though “I’m allowed to do anything,” I mustn’t be enslaved by anything
You can’t say that our bodies were made for sexual immorality
They were made for the Lord, and the Lord cares about our bodies
God will raise us from the dead by his power like His Son was risen.
Don’t you realize that your bodies are actually parts of Christ?
Should a man take his body, which is part of Christ, and sleep with a prostitute? Don’t you know that if a man joins himself to a prostitute, they’re united
He can’t separate himself from anyone whom he had been intertwined
Scriptures say that when a man and a woman joined in body, they are one
A person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him and his only Son
Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does
Sexual immorality is a sin against your own body which is God’s temple
He lives in you and was given to you by God? You don’t belong to yourself
God bought you with a high price. So, you must honor God with your body.

MEMORY VERSE
Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body. – 1 Corinthians 6:18
Read: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20
It’s amazing how many people don’t understand that our bodies are not ours but the Lord’s when we committed our lives to him. Just like a husband and wife, we can’t defile our bodies for it does belong to whom we have committed ourselves to.

REFLECTION
• What lies have the world taught us that makes us justify that sexual sins is okay?
• Why do we need to honor and respect our own bodies?
• What would a compromised body do to a person?
• Why do you think God wants us to honor our bodies?

RIOT IN EPHESUS Poem Devotional

RIOT IN EPHESUS
A poem by ILMA
When the story of Paul’s miracles and casting out demons spread in Ephesus
A solemn fear descended on the city and Jesus’ name was greatly honored
Many who became believers confessed their sinful practices
A number of them who was doing sorcery burned their books in public.
Afterward Paul felt compelled by the Spirit to go over to Macedonia and Achaia
Then he decided to go to Rome and sent Timothy and Erastus to Macedonia
About that time serious trouble developed in Ephesus concerning the Way
It began with Demetrius the silversmith who made shrines of goddess Artemis.
Demetrius kept many craftsmen busy and he called them together
He told them that wealth comes from this business of doing shrines
He told many that Paul convinced people that their handmade gods are fake
He also convinced that the goddess Artemis will be robbed of her prestige.
The Ephesians were angered and started to declare how great Artemis is
Everyone rushed to the amphitheatre and dragged Paul’s companions
Paul wanted to go in too but the believers warned him how dangerous it is
Some friends of Paul sent him a message begging him not to risk his life.

MEMORY VERSE
Paul wanted to go in too, but the believers wouldn’t let him. – Acts 19:30
Read: Acts 19
When Paul reached Ephesus, the Holy Spirit was with him so he was able to do a lot of miracles. Because Ephesus was a city of idols and the Ephesians worship Artemis as their goddess, there were shrines everywhere in the city. Paul preaching about the Good News have stirred so much opposition in the people of Ephesus and threatened to kill Paul and his followers. Paul wasn’t scared of anything but the other believers warned him.

• Has God given you courage amidst opposition and antagonism to preach the Good News?

PAUL’S SECOND MISSIONARY JOURNEY Poem Devotional

PAUL’S SECOND MISSIONARY JOURNEY
A poem by ILMA
Paul went first to Derbe and then to Lystra where Timothy was
Timothy’s mother was a Jewish believer but his father was Greek
Timothy was well though of by believers, so Paul asked him to join them
In deference to the Jews of the area, he asked him to be circumcised.
Then they went from town to town, instructing believers to follow
So, the churches were strengthened in their faith and grew
Next, Paul and Silas traveled through Phrygia and Galatia
The Holy Spirit prevented them from preaching in Asia.
Paul had a vision about a man from Macedonia pleading him to come
So, they decided to leave for Macedonia at once to preach the Good News
On a Sabbath, they went to a riverbank hoping to preach at the women
They met Lydia who was purple cloth merchant and accepted Paul’s teaching.
Lydia’s whole household were baptized and invited them to be her guests
“If you agree that I a a true believer, come and stay at my home” was her words
Then Paul met a slave girl who was earning money from fortune telling
Paul rebuked and asked the evil spirit to come out of her and it left her.

MEMORY VERSE
“If you agree that I am a true believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my home.” And she urged us until we agreed. – Acts 16:15
Read: Acts 16
In this second missionary Journey of Paul and Silas, we witness the proof of the Holy Spirit’s presence in their mission. They were led by the Spirit of God to go or not to proceed in a place and they followed the Spirit’s lead. We meet an extraordinary generous and hospitable woman named Lydia who became a believer and opened her house to the apostles.

INFINITE GOD Poem Devotional

The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. -Isaiah 40:28(NLT)
INFINITE GOD
A poem and essay by ILMA
Don’t worry about your life too much
You serve an infinite God who cares
He never grows weak or weary
He loves you much faithfully.
He created all things on earth
He is pleased with all that he made
Serve only the God who is endless
There is no other god who is boundless.
________________________________________
There are many people who have no concept of the infiniteness of the Lord. He alone created the whole universe with his spoken words. No person or other gods can ever do what he did. It is sad to see people live in unbelief and rebellion to an infinite God. He loved us so much and created all things for himself. We were all designed to please him because that is what we were made for. But because of the first fall, we have veered away from the plan that he had for us since the beginning of creation. How can we ever repay a God who did everything for us with such unfaithfulness and lawlessness?
The bible tells us how good our Lord is and how infinite he is. He knows all things. He defeated death by dying on the cross for us and redeeming us from the debt of sin. He never grows weak or weary.

PRAYER
Lord, let me meditate you’re your infinite mercy, glory and love for us.
