ECCLESIASTES 2 DEATH IS INEVITABLE & LIFE IS FLEETING

ECCLESIASTES 2
12 So I turned to consider wisdom and madness and folly. For what can the man do who comes after the king? Only what has already been done. 13 Then I saw that there is more gain in wisdom than in folly, as there is more gain in light than in darkness. 14 The wise person has his eyes in his head, but the fool walks in darkness. And yet I perceived that the same event happens to all of them. 15 Then I said in my heart, “What happens to the fool will happen to me also. Why then have I been so very wise?” And I said in my heart that this also is vanity. 16 For of the wise as of the fool there is no enduring remembrance, seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. How the wise dies just like the fool! 17 So I hated life, because what is done under the sun was grievous to me, for all is vanity and a striving after wind. – Ecclesiastes 2:12-17

ECCLESIASTES 2 DEATH IS INEVITABLE & LIFE IS FLEETING
A poem inspired by these verses by ILMA
Whether we live our lives chasing after wisdom
Or if we hold on to a life of reckless abandon
We will inevitably face death as it is a part of this life
Fools or wise, rich or poor, we will all eventually die.
The wise has his pursuit of wisdom and chase it with passion
The fool chooses to walk in darkness, chaos and deception
But they all will come to the same culmination, their life ends
So, what is the point of all this striving? It is just meaningless.
If our purpose in life is to chase dreams or be reckless
Is it worth living since our lives will eventually vanish?
What if we live for someone who will give us a life without end?
Won’t our lives be worth living if we have assurance of eternity?
Physical death will then be a welcome thought because we will be united with Christ
Our lives will be with purpose and no longer vain when we serve the One who was Risen
Fear of failure, death and being not good enough will no longer haunt us
We will see then that life is not our master, but it is Jesus, who is our Savior.

REVELATION ONLY THROUGH THE SPIRIT ILMA’S VLOG

REVELATION ONLY THROUGH THE SPIRIT
10 For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. 11 For who among people knows the thoughts of a person except the spirit of the person that is in him? So, also the thoughts of God no one knows, except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God. 13 We also speak these things, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words. – 2 Corinthians 1:10-13
________________________________________
In this letter, Paul emphasizes the divine nature of the Spirit. It is through the Spirit that we can understand things and get what God’s word really mean. It is through the Spirit of God that we learn to examine and understand things about us and the truth that only comes from God’s word. It is interesting to know that many of us, do not even recognize the importance of the role of the Holy Spirit in the triune God. In this letter, Paul explicitly gives us an illustration of how powerless and defeated we would be without God’s Spirit.
In verse 11, Paul tells us that no one knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of the person residing inside him. He likewise says that it is the same with God’s Spirit, only the Holy Spirit knows God’s thoughts. Paul reminds all the believers in verse 12 that those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ receives the Holy Spirit who gives them freely the revelations and understanding given by God. In verse 13, Paul says that the revelations we get from the Holy Spirit is unlike our human wisdom, but they are a combination of thoughts coming from God’s Spirit and spoken in the power of the Spirit of God.
Some people think that when they read something, they have the ability to understand it thoroughly. This is a very dangerous things to do. Philippians 4:8 says that we only think of whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, and whatever is worthy of praise. These are the only allowed thoughts by the Spirit of the Lord. Why? Because these are the thoughts that bring glory to God alone and protects every believer from the corruption that comes from the impurities of the world. The more we think of these things, the more we will hear what the Spirit of God reveals to us. The more we think of worldly things, the more we will make our flesh come to life which opposes God’s Spirit.

IMPORTANCE OF AGREEMENT AND UNITY ILMA’S VLOG

IMPORTANCE OF AGREEMENT AND UNITY
10 Now I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment. 11 For I have been informed concerning you, my brothers and sisters, by Chloe’s people, that there are quarrels among you. 12 Now I mean this, that each one of you is saying, “I am with Paul,” or “I am with Apollos,” or “I am with Cephas,” or “I am with Christ.” 13 Has Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I am thankful that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 so that no one would say you were baptized in my name! 16 But I did baptize the household of Stephanas also; beyond that, I do not know if I baptized anyone else. 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with cleverness of speech, so that the cross of Christ would not be made of no effect. – 1 Corinthians 1:10-17
________________________________________
In this letter, Paul writes to the Corinthian churches the importance of agreement and unity in the body of Christ. Paul rebukes the believers in Corinth because of a report made known to him regarding the quarrels among them. Like a father to his spiritual children, Paul disciplines them and tells them that in the body of Christ, division isn’t tolerated. In verse 10, he says that agreement makes them whole and complete.
He addresses and confronts the trivialities amongst them regarding their individual claims that they are either with Apollos, Cephas, Paul or with Christ. We humans can all be very shallow in our thinking. We like to speak of our preferences rather than our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. These concerns of Paul in the church in Corinth is not far away from our own struggles in our churches. When we like a pastor or a preacher, it is so easy to be derailed with how we like them instead of deepening our desire to know Christ and praise him. Our fallen nature caters more to our preferences instead of examining our hearts and making sure we are living for Christ rather than to our flesh. Paul clarifies the confusion brought about by these quarrels in verse 17. He brings up the importance of preaching the cross of Christ rather than talking about who baptized them and who have led them to Christ. Agreement among God’s people is essential because that is what Christ taught. How can we bring light into this corrupt world if the family of believers are actually divided and cannot agree at all?

THE COMING OF THE DAY OF THE LORD
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be discovered.11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! 13 But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwell.
– 2 Peter 3:10-13
________________________________________
In this letter of Peter, he warns all the believers about how the coming of the day of the Lord is. It will be like a thief when all that we are enjoying will be grabbed from us. The heavens will be gone with a loud sound and the intense heat will destroy the earth. Unlike the first destruction in Noah’s time, this will be a destruction in fire. Peter gives us a vivid picture of what will happen if people continue with their ungodly and wicked ways.
Wikipedia defines “end times” as (also called end times, end of time, end of days, last days, final days, doomsday, or eschaton) is a future described variously in the eschatologies of several world religions (both Abrahamic and non-Abrahamic), which teach that world events will reach a climax. Eschatology is a part of theology concerned with the final events of history, or the ultimate destiny of humanity. This concept is commonly referred to as “the end of the world” or “end times”. So many people are into wanting to know the details about the end times. They get so consumed by knowing how they can prepare for it, but they miss out preparing their hearts to be right and to ready themselves to the inevitable event. I know there are some groups who actually physically prepare for this end of days by equipping themselves to live in places where they can survive. How crazy that sounds. They miss out on the spiritual aspect of it all.
Peter calls it the “Lord’s Day” instead of all those terms of the annihilation of the world. He focuses on the hope that evil is going to be destroyed and a new heaven and earth will follow. A place where only righteousness dwells. What a comfort it is to know that we will be rid of all of this world’s systems and darkness! But they are only comforting to those who will choose Christ as their Lord and Savior. The others will be judged and destroyed.

WHEN ONE ABANDONS THE RIGHT WAY ILMA’S VLOG

WHEN ONE ABANDONS THE RIGHT WAY
Reckless, self-centered, they speak abusively of angelic majesties without trembling, 11 whereas angels who are greater in might and power do not bring a demeaning judgment against them before the Lord. 12 But these, like unreasoning animals, born as creatures of instinct to be captured and killed, using abusive speech where they have no knowledge, will in the destruction of those creatures also be destroyed, 13 suffering wrong as the wages of doing wrong. They count it a pleasure to revel in the daytime. They are stains and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions as they feast with you, 14 having eyes full of adultery that never cease from sin, enticing unstable souls, having hearts trained in greed, accursed children; 15 abandoning the right way, they have gone astray, having followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved the reward of unrighteousness; 16 but he received a rebuke for his own offense, for a mute donkey, speaking with a human voice, restrained the insanity of the prophet. – 2 Peter 2:11-16
________________________________________
Previous to these passages, in 2 Peter 2:9-10, he addresses those who continue to corrupt others and how the Lord rescues the godly. Peter explains the consequence of such indulgence to sin and illustrates a picture of those who despise authority. He describes these false teachers as reckless and self-centered. Speaking against all of God’s creation and laws.
In verse 12, he likens these heretics to animals who have no control about what comes out of their mouths. They act thoughtlessly and follow their natural tendencies. In other words, they follow their cravings and flesh but they are devoid of wisdom or knowledge since they are walking the path of unrighteousness. They refuse to bring their strongholds to submit to the obedience of Christ. They defy all authorities that God has set for them to follow. The only thing they follow are their merry-ways and give in to their lusts.
In verse 15, Peter refers to Balaam (from Numbers 22-24). Balaam was a wicked prophet in the Bible and is noteworthy because, although he was a wicked prophet, he was not a false prophet. That is, Balaam did hear from God, and God did give him some true prophecies to speak. However, Balaam’s heart was not right with God, and eventually he showed his true colors by betraying Israel and leading them astray. Peter cautions the believers of such corruption from people of unrighteousness.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ESTABLISHED IN THE TRUTH ILMA’S VLOG

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ESTABLISHED IN THE TRUTH
12 Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them and have been established in the truth which is present with you. 13 I consider it right, as long as I am in this earthly dwelling, to stir you up by way of reminder, 14 knowing that the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 15 And I will also be diligent that at any time after my departure you will be able to call these things to mind. – 2 Peter 1:12-15
________________________________________
In this letter Peter is repeatedly warning the believers of the qualities that a believer should continually seek to do in order to be established in the truth. Peter had made it his life goal to ensure that each believer is keeping up with the cost of being a follower of Jesus. He wants them to be established in truth and he says in verse 13 that he will do everything he can for as long as he lives to stir up every believer in the way that is right.
We see how Peter was all out to make it his life goal to remind all believers to equip themselves to diligently do what is expected of every one who commits to Christ. In verse 15, he declares that even after he is no longer alive, he is leaving a legacy where each believer will have to remember all that Jesus has taught them.
The word “truth” had been so misused by the world that it is no longer about God’s word. The truth has taken on a very subjective perspective even to a point that it has been taken to a point of relativism. Truth is what each person’s perspective it, not God’s viewpoint. You ask someone if they know the truth and most people would say what they think of something and they think that is the truth. Sadly, the world has corrupted the real meaning of truth by making it about how humans see things. Truth is about absolutes not about what humans perceive or know. Truth comes from the word of God because God is the fountain of knowledge. He knows everything and is the source of all that is right. He is truth and only by abiding and following him can we know the truth. That is why Peter is so adamant that all believers stay grounded on the truth that only comes from God’s word. He knows that once we veer away from it, we will surely turn away from the narrow road that leads to ruin and destruction. When we are established in the truth, we will never falter in our faith and we will eventually have the promises of God be fulfilled in our lives. We are given a foolproof guarantee of our salvation.

QUALITIES FOR CHRISTIAN FOR PRODUCTIVE LIVING ILMA’S VLOG

QUALITIES FOR CHRISTIAN FOR PRODUCTIVE LIVING
5 Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, 6 and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness
7 and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. 8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they do not make you useless nor
unproductive in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For the one who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins. – 2 Peter 1:5-9
________________________________________
In this letter, Peter gives us all the secret for Christian living. He discusses the process involved in a Christian’s spiritual growth.
1. Apply diligence. – Merriam Webster defines diligence as steady, earnest, and energetic effort: devoted and painstaking work and application to accomplish an undertaking. No wonder Peter wants believers to be use this quality in their lives.
2. In your faith, supply moral excellence. It is the quality of doing what is right and avoiding what is wrong. We are expected to use this quality in our faith.
3. Employ knowledge in your moral excellence. – Knowledge is defined as facts, information, and skills acquired by a person through experience or education.
4. Self-control must be applied as you use knowledge. – There is a danger of being boastful when we do not have self-control. It makes us performers rather than using knowledge to edify the body of Christ.
5. In your self-control, there must be perseverance. – it is a continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition or steadfastness.
6. In persevering, there must be godliness. – it is the quality or state of being pure or clean. Without this quality, we will only be striving to perform instead of being righteous.
7. In your godliness, do not fail to give brotherly kindness. – Always make sure that you are always considerate, generous and patient.
8. Show love as you exhibit brotherly kindness. – We are all made in God’s image, so we have an anointing
These qualities are very essential for a believer to grow in their walk with the Spirit.

BE HUMBLE AND BE EXAMPLES TO THE FLOCK ILMA’S VLOG

BE HUMBLE AND BE EXAMPLES TO THE FLOCK
Therefore, I urge elders among you, as your fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and one who is also a fellow partaker of the glory that is to be revealed: 2 shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not with greed but with eagerness; 3 nor yet as domineering over those assigned to your care, but by proving to be examples to the flock. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. 5 You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT HE GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE. – 1 Peter 5:1-5
________________________________________
In this letter, Peter charges the other elders as a fellow elder himself, to be a witness of the sufferings of Christ and also someone who will look forward to the glory that will be revealed to them. In verse 2, Peter asks them to shepherd the flock that God has given them, ensuring that they implementing foresight and sound leadership. He stresses the importance of initiative and not just doing their duties out of compulsion, but according to God’s will. He cautions them about greed and advises them to be eager and passionate about their big responsibilities in ensuring that the sheepfold is cared for. He warns them of the danger of putting themselves in high esteem and controlling the flock. Instead, Peter commands them to be a role model to the entire flock. In verse 4, Peter points to the reward that awaits those elders who faithfully shepherds the flock that have been given to them. They will receive the crown of life.
In our world today, there are lots of churches that are compromised when it comes to the integrity of the elders. The role of the elders is no longer set apart from worldly systems in many false churches. It is no longer taking care of God’s flock that is their role, but having their agendas met. It is precious that Peter writes this letter to admonish the elders and also the younger men.
In verse 5, the younger men are commanded to submit to the authority of the elders. A leader is not able to lead well without submissive members of the flock. He wants all believers to cloak themselves in humility because God opposes the proud.

REFLECTION
• Why is role modelling more important than telling someone what to do?

KEEP YOUR MOUTH FROM EVIL & PURSUE PEACE ILMA’S VLOG

KEEP YOUR MOUTH FROM EVIL & PURSUE PEACE
10 For, “THE ONE WHO DESIRES LIFE, TO LOVE AND SEE GOOD DAYS, MUST KEEP HIS TONGUE FROM EVIL AND HIS LIPS FROM SPEAKING DECEIT. 11 HE MUST TURN AWAY FROM EVIL AND DO GOOD; HE MUST SEEK PEACE AND PURSUE IT.12 FOR THE EYES OF THE LORD ARE TOWARD THE RIGHTEOUS, AND HIS EARS ATTEND TO THEIR PRAYER, BUT THE FACE OF THE LORD IS AGAINST EVILDOERS.” – 1 Peter 3:10-12
________________________________________
In this letter, Peter warns all believes to stay away from evil. He says that if we desire life and witness good day, he gives us the formula for doing so.
Here are some of the things he wants all of us to do so we can never be waylaid to go the wrong way:
1. Refrain from saying evil things – Let your mouth only speak what is right and what gives life. Luke 6:45 reiterates this warning of Peter to the believers. It says that “for it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks.”
2. Do not let any lie or deceit come out of your lips – When you say things that are not true, you are opening doors for more sins. If we always align our thoughts with God’s will, we will never utter a lie or deceive anyone.
3. Turn your back from any wickedness and turn towards good – When we encounter temptations, we must literally turn around towards the Lord and obey his word. Obedience to God is the only weapon we have against the devil. He flees from anyone who is faithful to obey, depend and trust in the Lord.
4. Seek peace and pursue it- Peace is a fruit of the Holy Spirit which is a result of the constant abiding in Christ. Jesus is the Prince of Peace. You can only experience it when you seek Him. The only thing that this world offers is the opposite of peace.
Peter gives the reason why we need to follow these pointers in verse 12. God gives favor to those who are pure, holy and righteous and He listens to their prayers attentively. The Lord will not even hear or turn towards those who do wicked things.
In this world we live in, evil is so pervasive. Everywhere we look, we are faced with many forms of wickedness. Sometimes, they are even packaged very nicely and subtly that we don’t even discern that they are deceptions and manipulations to trick us into engaging in it. I love how Peter admonishes all believers and challenges them to live holy lives that gives praise and honor to God alone.
