Oh the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked or stand around with sinners or join in with mockers. – Psalm 1;1(NLT)
ON CHOOSING GOOD
A poem and essay by ILMA
Those who choose to do good are blessed
They do the right thing and knows what’s best
They do not follow the advice of the wicked
They don’t stand around sinners and join mockers.
Blessed are those who guard their hearts and do right
They will have joy overflowing in their lives
They will prosper from the good deeds they do
And will reap the Spirit’s fruit as they live the truth.

Psychiatrist William Glasser distinguished between survival and psychological needs in his 1996 book Choice Theory. He postulated that unhappiness results from bad relationships with relatives and friends, which in turn suffer as a result of making misguided choices. He believed that by making better choices, we can maintain better relationships which will help us to lead a more fulfilled lives. I have no idea what Glasser’s theory was based on or if he was influenced by some truths that comes from God’s word. But the truth presented in Psalm 1:1 about avoiding the counsel of the wicked and not following their ways must have been either a conscious or unconscious source in his formulation of this theory. When we choose do to right thing, joy will be overflowing.

WHATEVER IS GOOD AND PERFECT Poem Devotional

Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. -James 1:17(NLT)
WHATEVER IS GOOD AND PERFECT
A poem and essay by ILMA
Each time we have something good going
We ought to give the Lord thanksgiving
Whatever is right and flawless
It comes from our God who is faultless.
Watch out for blessings that come your way
It is from our good God, so continue to pray
Ask and you will receive from our Lord and Savior
He loves you and grants you a life that is bountiful.

Do you count all the good things that come your way? Are you thankful for these blessings in every way? What makes a person happier in life? When someone is complaining all the time, it is very hard to learn to be thankful. I used to be a negative and whiny person. I allowed bitterness to creep in my heart. By doing that, I allowed myself to become a grumpy and difficult person to be with. People started avoiding me, until someone I loved honestly assessed my pessimism and bitterness.
I started to count my blessings. Each day, I would keep a list of things that I can be grateful for. It started out as a short list, but progressed to longer ones later on. We are reminded to thank the Lord for every good and perfect thing that we receive.

PRAYER
Thank you Jesus, for your generosity.

What happens if we don’t acknowledge the blessings we receive?

See that no one pays back evil for evil, but always try to do good to each other and to all people. – 1 Thessalonians 5:15 (NLT)
DO GOOD TO ALL PEOPLE
A poem and essay by ILMA
Has anyone done you wrong lately?
Don’t retaliate, forgive quickly
Don’t pay back evil for evil
Or you will open doors for the devil.
The Lord wants us to do good always
It manifests our love and kindness
If you are a disciple of Jesus
You will easily grant forgiveness.________________________________________
In Exodus 21:24, we are told of the law “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a hand for a hand, a foot for a foot.” In his book The End of the Law: Mosaic Covenant in the Pauline Theology, Jason Meyer explains that the concept of “an eye for eye,” sometimes called jus talionis or lex talionis, is part of the Mosaic Law used in the Israelites’ justice system. Justice should be equitable; excessive harshness and excessive leniency should be avoided. Meyer clearly states in his book that this law was for the judicial system and doesn’t apply to personal relationships.
In Matthew 5, Jesus teaches the opposite of this law when he said in verse 39 to offer your other cheek if someone slaps you. Paul reiterates Christ’s teaching about doing good and letting go of being wronged. He advises us to give back good for evil.

He loves whatever is just and good; the unfailing love of the Lord fills the earth.
Psalm 33:5(NLT)
WHATEVER IS JUST AND GOOD
A poem and essay by ILMA
Whatever is just and good is loved by the Lord
He doesn’t want evil and cruelty in this world
He designed us for righteousness and not evil
He doesn’t want us to be controlled by the devil.
Think only of what is pure and good and honorable
Then you will be godly and totally admirable
The Lord’s love is unconditional and unfailing
Do whatever is just and good so you won’t be sinning.

Do you ever wonder why people choose to do evil rather than do good? The apostle Paul talks about human nature. We usually desire good but end up doing the opposite. Why are we not victorious over our nature to be bent on satisfying our flesh? It took me many years to understand it because I was raised to believe that I make my own destiny and build my own dreams and career. I was foolish to think that I can do anything in my own strength. I believed that I can change myself, people around me and the world. What a dreamer!!!
The bible tells us that the Lord loves whatever is just and good and his unfailing love fills the earth. Do we allow his love to rule our lives?

If you search for good, you will find favor; but if you search for evil, it will find you.
– Proverbs 11:27(NLT)
SEARCH ONLY FOR THE GOOD
A poem and essay by ILMA
To those who seek the Lord and his truth
They will find favor and his teachings will take root
If you search for evil, it will find you
If you look for the good, it will renew you.
Search only for the good so you can stay out of trouble
The enemy seeks to destroy you and throw you in a rubble
Seek him and let the Lord be the first priority in your life
It will bless you and cloak you with his dazzling living light.

Proverbs 23:7 states that as a man thinks, so is he. Dr. Becca Levy, from the Yale School of Public Health, has found some extraordinary benefits of an optimistic outlook. In one study, she looked at 660 people who’d completed a survey about their attitude to aging in 1975, then correlated their responses to the ages at which they died. “We found that individuals with a more positive view of aging tended to live seven-and-a-half years longer than those with more negative views of aging,” says Dr. Levy.
The book of Proverbs suggests that you must search for the good to find favor and avoid looking for evil, for it will find it’s way to you.
PRAYER
Lord, let me always look for only the good that comes from you.
REFLECTION
Why are we advised not to search for evil? What happens when we do?
