BITTER ROOTS
A poem by ILMA
Do your best to pursue a peaceful and pure life
Look after one another so you’ll receive God’s grace
Watch out for bitter roots that are poisonous
They corrupt many and they destroy relationships.
Remember how Esau traded his birthright for a single meal?
Make sure you don’t follow his immoral and godless ways
Afterward, when he wanted his blessings, he was rejected
It was too late for repentance though he begged with bitter tears.
When bitterness dwells in your heart, it can create havoc
Make your heart right by confessing and repenting and staying pure
Grant forgiveness to others as God has forgiven each of your sins
Let the Holy Spirit show you the roots of bitterness in your hearts.

MEMORY VERSE
Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.
– Hebrews 12:15
Read: Hebrews 12:14-20; Ruth 1:1-21
One story in the bible that gives us a picture of bitterness is in the book of Ruth. Naomi who was married to Elimelech was moved from Bethlehem to Moab, a pagan country. Her husband died and after ten years, she lost both her two sons who had Moabite women for their wives. When she decided to go back to Bethlehem, she found out that she was bitter and blaming God for all the tragedy she experienced. It made her discouraged and see God responsible for all the losses in her life.

REFLECTION
• How can we easily be tricked by bitterness?
• What are the symptoms of a bitter heart?
• Why do we need to ask the Holy Spirit to bring us to the root of bitterness?

HOW TO RECEIVE GOD’S GRACE
A poem and essay by ILMA
Have you committed yourself to Jesus?
Do you know how much you are precious?
If you want to receive God’s grace
You must do what the word says.
Look after each other so no one fails to receive it
Then you will be harvesting the fruits of the Spirit
He commanded us to care for one another
Are you showing your love for your sisters and brothers?

The word ‘grace’ (CHEN in Hebrew, CHARIS in Greek), as it is used in the scriptures, literally means ‘favour’, to bend or stoop in kindness to another as a superior to an inferior. It has the idea of graciousness in manner or action. When used in reference to God, it is the benevolent action of Him stooping down to us in His kindness to reach us in our need, and convey upon us a benefit. What an awesome God! He stoops down to our level just so he can show his love for us. Have you ever been loved this much by anyone?
The bible tells us that there is a requirement to receive the grace of God. He wants us to look after each other so that we won’t miss it. By loving others, we show that we love him.

PRAYER
Show me how to live in your grace always.
REFLECTION
Why do some Christians fail to live in God’s grace?

POISONOUS ROOT OF BITTERNESS
A poem and essay by ILMA
Do you secretly have resentments on anyone?
Have you been affected and offended by someone?
Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness troubles you
This destructive root can distort all that is good and true.
Look after each other so you will receive God’s grace
God’s convictions can make you defeat the enemy and face
Forgive easily and you won’t be affected by bitterness
Confess and repent your sins to stay in God’s righteousness.

Do you know when someone is bitter? Do you know the root of anger, resentment, irritability, impatience, spirit of offense, envy and comparison, jealousy, legalism? These are just some of the manifestations of bitterness in your life. The sad thing about bitterness is that you are usually the last person to know. I had experienced all of the manifestations I just mentioned for many years without knowing that the root of it all is bitterness. When I started studying the bible, God convicted me of this stronghold in our family. The bible says that we must look after each other so that we won’t fail to receive the grace of God and to watch out that no root of bitterness troubles us.
PRAYER
Lord, protect me from bitterness.
REFLECTION
How can you cut the poisons of the root of bitterness in your life?

POISONOUS ROOT OF BITTERNESS
A poem and essay by ILMA
Do you find yourself angry or irritable with everyone?
Do you gripe about past hurts and blame someone?
Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness creeps up
It can damage many relationships easily and so abrupt.
Look after each other so you won’t miss God’s grace
Have the courage to take responsibility and face
Beware of any form of resentment or hostility
It can destroy your faith, joy and tranquility.

There were many years of my life that I was bitter. I didn’t even know I was full of resentment and hostility towards many people and many things. After five decades of stronghold on this poisonous root, God delivered me from it and made me understand the damage it had on my life and relationships. Bitterness came in many forms in my life. It robbed me of joy and made me criticize automatically people around me who reminded me of those people who neglected and abused me. It made my heart heavy and I actually made myself sick physically as well. The bible tells us to watch out for any form of bitterness for it deprives us of God’s grace and it corrupts us too.
PRAYER
Lord make me aware when this poisonous root of bitterness strikes me.
REFLECTION
What do you think is the antidote to bitterness?
