PSALM 16 THE LORD IS MY CHOSEN PORTION & MY CUP
Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge. 2 I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.” 3 As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight. 4 The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips.
5 The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot.6 The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.7 I bless the LORD who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. 8 I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure.10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. 11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
– Psalm 16:1-11

PRAYER FOR PURITY AND CONTENTMENT by ILMA
My Lord and my God, I come to you for safety
You are my Master and you own me totally
I am useless without you, help me to never turn to the world
Preserve me from corruption and let me dwell in your word
Surround me with other people who worship you
Keep me away from those who praise other gods
Help me never to stray from the path that you have laid down
It is my source of strength, guidance and wisdom.
I bless the Lord who continually leads the way
I can only endure anything if I don’t get derailed
Lord, let my heart rejoice for you are my portion
You help me survive and thrive amidst this corruption
Keep me from my nature so I can be holy and pure
Let me never pine for anything especially when I am insecure
Show me how to be content; your grace is enough
Give me humility so I can take anything that is hard and rough.

YOU WILL NOT ABANDON MY SOUL
Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge. 2 I say to the LORD,
“You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.”
3 As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones in whom is all my delight.
4 The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply;
Their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips.
5 The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot.
6 The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.
7 I bless the LORD who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me.
8 I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand,
I shall not be shaken.9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;
My flesh also dwells secure.10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
Or let your holy one see corruption. 11 You make known to me the path of life;
In your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
-Psalm 16:1-11

The psalm declares the result of entrusting one’s life to God. They experience confidence and contentment knowing that without the Lord, they are nothing. It declares the importance of taking delight in being with the other holy people of God. They set themselves apart to those who are idolaters because they have chosen to be faithful to the Lord. They take counsel from him alone and allow his Spirit to guide and teach him. They have that joy from being with a God who is solid rock and they are all secure in him.
God never abandons his people. He is always there for them.
