PSALM 62 SET NOT YOUR HEART ON RICHES
9 Those of low estate are but a breath;
those of high estate are a delusion;
in the balances they go up;
they are together lighter than a breath.
10 Put no trust in extortion;
set no vain hopes on robbery;
if riches increase, set not your heart on them.
11 Once God has spoken;
twice have I heard this:
that power belongs to God,
12 and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love.
For you will render to a man
according to his work. – Psalm 62:9-12

A poem inspired by this psalm by ILMA
All you people of God, do not be attached to your wealth
All the things we have are all coming from our gracious God
Do not put down those who are poor and lowly
They are blessed by the Lord, so treat them kindly.
If your wealth increases, do not set your heart on them
They are fleeting and when you die, you can’t bring it
Do not garner riches by stealing or extortion
The Lord hates any form of cheating or injustice.
Set not your heart on riches that are earthly
Instead, gather riches that are eternal and heavenly
Our earthly life is only temporary and just a stop over
The life to come is our destination and lasts forever.

REFLECTION
• Why do you think God doesn’t want us to set our hearts on earthly riches?
• What happens when we get so attached with the gifts that God gives us?
• What kind of riches should we focus on gathering instead of material wealth?
