THE AIM OF RECONCILIATION ILMA’S VLOG Posted on February 23, 2021 by ilmaarts February 23 ________________________________________ THE AIM OF RECONCILIATION 21 And although you were previously alienated and hostile in attitude, engaged in evil deeds, 22 yet He has now reconciled you in His body of flesh through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach— 23 if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister. – Colossians 1:21-23 ________________________________________ Paul explains in this part of his letter to the Colossians what Christ did for all mankind. He broke the hostility between God and man due to sin. When Adam and Eve broke that fellowship with God when they disobeyed, the whole humanity was subject to God’s wrath. Nothing could appease God’s hatred for evil deeds. Although God is a very patient and forgiving God, as we witness how he delivered His own people from the Egyptians in Exodus. He gave them all the chance to repent and come back to Him, but they continually disobeyed and engaged in wickedness. God, who loves us so much gave a solution for mankind’s sinfulness. He knew that no human could appease his anger over evil, so He sent his only begotten Son Jesus, so we could be reconciled with Him. What an amazing God we have that He actually gave a way out for us to turn our back to sin. It is His Son who will break that alienation and hostility, if we believe in Him. Paul explains the importance of seeing the value of this gift of reconciliation through the cross and the blood of Jesus. When Jesus died for us, He expected those who will receive Him, to walk in that holy and blameless life that he gave to those who will follow Him. So, all believers are required to walk in the new creation that Jesus gave us, a transformed life that is pure and holy. Barclay comments that the aim of reconciliation is holiness. Christ carried out his sacrificial work of reconciliation in order to present us to God consecrated and irreproachable. It is easy to twist the idea of the love of God and to say, “Well, if God loves me like this and wishes nothing but reconciliation, sin does not matter. I can do what I like and God will still love me.” The reverse is true. In another sense it makes things agonizingly and almost impossibly difficult, for it lays upon us this ultimate obligation of seeking to be worthy of that love. Reconciliation has another kind of obligation, that of standing fast in the faith and never abandoning the hope of the gospel. ________________________________________ REFLECTION • Why do you think some believers don’t think of the aim of reconciliation?
