WATCH OUT FOR THE ERRORS OF UNSCRUPULOUS PEOPLE!
14 Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found spotless and blameless by Him, at peace, 15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, 16 as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which there are some things that are hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction. 17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of unscrupulous people and lose your own firm commitment, 18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen. – 2 Peter 3:14-18

In previous passages before these following verses, Peter mentioned about the new heavens and the new earth that is promised to all those who love the Lord and follow his narrow path. In this part of his letter, he continues to encourage them to be diligent in their righteousness in Christ and be at peace because they have been freed. We can only have peace when we are abiding in Christ. Apart from him, we will always have a struggle to be content in life. In verse 15, Peter tells us of another nature of the Lord. He is full of patience and that his patience is actually our salvation. Can you imagine if God is as impatient as we are? No one will be saved. We do not have that forgiving and merciful nature as God does. Peter mentions this and reminds them that he and Paul are one in the wisdom given to them by God regarding his mercy and grace.
There is an important warning that Peter stresses in this letter: to watch out for the errors of those corrupt people who mishandles the gospel. They teach lies instead of the truth. Because they are untaught and unstable, they distort the Scriptures. If the believers aren’t aware of their schemes and plot to corrupt the truth, they will fall victims to their agenda and mislead them. Peter wants them to be on their guard so that they know when these unscrupulous people will start to corrupt them. He wants them to stand firm in their walking in righteousness. He wants them to ensure that they are abiding in Christ. Most of all, he encourages them to grow in their knowledge of Christ and to give him all the honor, glory and praise. This is the only way they can defeat all the schemes of those who want to destroy their faith.
